How to get to St Barts
There are no long-haul flights to St Barts: its airport has a 646-meter runway reserved for small aircraft. Most travelers fly into Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM) in St Martin, then take a 15-minute flight, a ferry of about 50 minutes from Marigot, or a private boat to the island.
Step 1: fly into St Martin (SXM)
Princess Juliana International Airport (SXM), on the Dutch side of St Martin, is the main gateway: it receives direct flights from North America and Europe.
Airlines and routes change with the seasons, so check current schedules when you book. St Barth Commuter also connects St Barts with Pointe-à-Pitre (PTP) in Guadeloupe.
Step 2a: the short flight to St Barts
Flights from St Martin (SXM, or Grand Case SFG on the French side) to St Barts (SBH) take about 15 minutes, with daily departures.
St Barts airport (Gustaf III, also called Rémy de Haenen) is in St-Jean. Airlines serving it include St Barth Commuter, Winair, Tradewind Aviation and Cape Air. Its short runway requires pilots with a specific qualification, and small planes mean limited luggage allowances.
Step 2b: the ferry
Ferries leave from the Marigot ferry terminal in French St Martin, with a crossing of about 50 minutes and two to three departures a day; Great Bay Express sails from Philipsburg on the Dutch side.
Step 2c: a private boat
For a private crossing at your own time, the Contender 39 of Saint-Barth Yachting handles transfers between St Barts and St Martin on request, with captain and crew.
Getting around once you arrive
St Barts uses the euro and French is the official language, with English widely spoken in tourist areas. To explore the island from a villa, a rental car is the easiest option.
